Soot

Terms

Last updated 5 October 2026

These terms are between you and Soot, which is made in Edinburgh, Scotland. They cover the Soot apps for Mac, iPad and iPhone, Soot Pro and the Soot Sync service. By using them you agree to these terms. The privacy page says what Soot keeps about you.

The app

The Soot editor is free. Copies from the App Store are also covered by Apple’s standard licence agreement. Where it and these terms differ about Soot Sync or Soot Pro, these terms apply.

Your notes are yours

Soot claims no rights in anything you write. Your notes are plain Markdown files in a folder you choose, and you can open, move or copy them with anything, with or without Soot.

Keep your own backups. Soot Sync keeps earlier versions and deleted notes for a time, but it’s a way of keeping devices in step, not a backup.

Soot Sync

Using the service fairly

Don’t use Soot Sync to break the law, to get round the storage allowance, to share one account between several people, or to disrupt the service or anyone else’s use of it. An account that does may be suspended. Soot will tell you why and give you the chance to take your notes first, unless the law prevents it.

Changes to the service

Soot will improve and change over time. If Soot Sync is ever to close, account holders will be told by email at least 60 days before, with time to make sure their notes are on their own devices.

Liability

Soot is made with care and provided as it is. Nothing in these terms limits your rights as a consumer, or any liability that the law doesn’t allow to be limited. Otherwise, Soot isn’t liable for losses it couldn’t reasonably have foreseen, and its total liability to you is limited to what you paid for Soot Pro in the 12 months before the claim.

Ending

You can stop using Soot at any time, and delete your account as the privacy page describes. Cancel Soot Pro with Apple as well, since deleting your account doesn’t cancel an App Store subscription.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change in a way that matters to you, account holders are emailed before the change takes effect. Carrying on using Soot after that means accepting them.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of Scotland. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you can also bring a claim in your own courts, and you keep the consumer rights your own law gives you.

Soot is the trading name of Robert Schmitt, a sole trader in Scotland.
